Taking The First Step

Our experienced couples counsellors at Relationship Counselling Kent have helped hundreds of couples navigate challenges and create lasting change. We know reaching out can feel like a big step, especially if one of you feels unsure.

Here’s what you can expect:

A supportive, non-judgemental space – we don’t take sides or decide who’s right or wrong

Honest, open conversation guided by thoughtful questions from your therapist

Help understanding each other’s perspectives more clearly

Support even if you’re not sure what outcome you want yet – we’ll work it out together

Counsellors who actively take part in the session, not just sit and listen

Clients often tell us how quickly they feel at ease with our therapists – and that makes all the difference. When you feel relaxed, it’s easier to open up and communicate, which helps us understand what’s really going on between you.

What Happens During A Session?

At the start of couples counselling, you will both be asked what you’d like to get from the sessions.

Some couples want to stay together and work things through

Others may be looking for help to separate more amicably

It’s also completely natural to feel unsure – many people use therapy to gain clarity

Your therapist will support you either way and help you move forward at your own pace.

You will each have time to share what you feel the issues are, when they began, and how they’ve affected you. Your therapist may gently ask for examples to help you both understand each other more clearly.

Postive Steps Forward

As couples therapy progresses, the aim is to help you both feel heard, understood, and supported. With your therapist’s guidance, you will begin to see the bigger picture of your relationship – from both sides.

Here’s what to expect:

Support in listening more openly and understanding each other’s point of view

Help managing emotions and setting healthy boundaries

Clarity on what matters most to each of you, as individuals and as a couple

Space to explore differences and agree on fair compromises

A chance to rebuild trust, intimacy, and emotional connection – if that’s what you both want

When therapy comes to an end, your therapist will guide you on how to keep things on track. You’ll also have the option of booking follow-up sessions any time you need extra support.
